Matkalla project appears at bulletin: Mexico in the North

It is a special honor to share this news. The Mexican Embassy in Finland produces a bi-monthly bulletin entitled Mexican in the North, and in its current number our project Matkalla appears.

Our project Matkalla was thought to support 13 years old pupils from Colegio Finlandés in Guadalajara, México and Lieksan keskuskoulu in Lieksa Finland. We worked jointly during the school’s year. Who are we? that is directives, teachers, students and facilitators.

We learned from each other during the process.  We know there is much to do and it is of relevant importance continue to create ties with visionary individuals as the teachers and directives of Colegio Finlandés and Lieksan keskuskoulu, to create innovative teams.

Thanks to the Mexican Embassy in Finland for your excellent article. Without a question, this project of Matkalla is an example of what we are capable to do if we join efforts, put our passion and will,  and together we can move forward.

Now, it is time to wish a wonderful summer holidays to all the Matkalla participants and thank you for making this project a reality!

SciFest 2017

A special day arrived. A day when our authors presented their work to the general public. Unfortunately, it was not possible that our Mexican peers were present physically with us at the festival. Nevertheless, their work was displayed at our booth and we know they were in essence with us.  The  Mexican Embassy in Finland also supported us by sharing us some items that we could distribute among the visitors to our booth, after they read some stories of our authors 😉

20170512_133717

Our booth has two walls which we could decorate. One of them display the name of the project with the logos of all the partners: Colegio Finlandés, Lieksan keskuskoulu and Ubium.  The other wall display the flags of the countries working together (Finland and Mexico), and the name of group who was presenting the stories in-situ.

The process was that every 30 min, we had 2 students who were at charge of the booth. That is, they present their stories to the festival visitors. Consequently, all the students have the opportunity to interact with the public and explain their projects.

We had a table with a Mexican tablecloth, and a flag of Lieksa. In this table were also storyboards from Mexico.  On another table we had the items from the Méxican Embassy. This table also had a laptop in case someone decided to create a story in-situ, and we did develop some stories.

As we mentioned previously, we got a premium location. You can see this in the following photo:

People from all ages read thee stories from our project. Some read the digital stories while others read the storyboards.

The day was a full experience for all the people involved in our project of Matkalla.

We can also summarize that the project Matkalla has been a real journey:

  1. Select our photos
  2. Share our photos and question about themr
  3. Research about our photos through different lenses of science
  4. Create our storyboards
  5. Write our stories in English and our mother tongue
  6. Present our stories to a general public
  7. and we still have one more step to achieve….

At this moment we want to thank all to the schools, the teachers, and each author of this project to make a reality. Also we want to thank the SciFest organizers for all your efforts in the festival and to all the readers of our work.

– – Matkalla team

Note: It is relevant to mention that we took the music from CassisB & Boxerin from the project Windows to the World. The intention was to attract the attention to festival’s visitors to our booth. However, the place was loud enough that we could not play the music as we thought.

Skype day!

Today all our storytellers  will meet via skype!  Thanks to the digital technology that facilitate the work of two schools from different continents to know each other.

Exciting day!

Before our talk, today’s work is to advance and/or finalize our current stories in English. In this link are the stories of Lieksan keskuskoulu and Colegio Finlandés. The pages at the moment are password protected. Each school has its password. The reason is we want to have the authors happy with their final work before we make the stories public.

Let’s target that our stories in English are ready before our the next session. Then in the next session you will be able to present your story and then work towards translate it into your mother tongue.  🙂

—- Memories from our skype call.

Getting ready to digitize your story.

By now, all our students are working really had with their research and  building their story.  In this session we want to prepare you, so you can have all the material ready to digitize your story.

To make this example research about some of the objects in Flickr and we selected 4 for this story.

These are the steps we followed:

I.  We decide to have a branched story, that is it will have 4 different endings. Thus it follows the following diagram.

type-of-story

The diagram is will be the  base of my storyboard.

II.  We define our character. This character will help us to build the narrative into our story. To define our character we follow the next steps.

  1. Draw the face of my story’s character.
  2. Give name to my character
  3. Write 5 adjectives of  the character’s appearance
  4. Write 5 adjectives of the character’s personality
  5. Write 3 hobbies of the character
  6. Say where the character lives
  7. Write what is the challenge the character will resolve.

In the photo below you can read the description of my character. If you haven’t written the  description of your character you have  15 min to do so.  To help you, give answer to each one of the questions.

character-alux

III. Next from “Observation and question table”  I select the relevant information, from the objects to involve in my story.

IV. Time to build the story!

If you see the following file, you will notice my storyboard: storyboard_alux

Next, I need to type my text on the editor! 🙂

Note: If I can bring with me which photos I want to put in our story, it will be and advantage. In my case I mainly will located the photos of the objects and my character.

HOMEWORK!!!

NExt time have your stories ready to digitize!!!! 🙂

So we can put them in the computer 🙂

Writing your story

Organizational question:

When can we have our Skype/hangout meeting between the schools?

All of us will have to present briefly, perhaps by saying our name, age and hobby.

We have  8 hrs difference, that is in Mexico will be 7 am and in Finland 3pm.

From our previous session we had been working on analyzing our objects. So,  we know about our objects and we have an idea of our story.

  1. Do you have your “table of question and answers” of your objects ready?
  2. What has been interesting for you to discover from the objects you selected?
  3. Who knows already the character, purpose and plot of your story?

We are aware that some of you have been working on your story already. So, we want to be sure we have all the elements ready before we digitize all the stories.

Remember we can have different types of storylines.

For example: a linear storyline:

linear-traditional

A branched storyline:

branching

We decide what will be best for our story.

Remember to make questions in your stories!

Part of the purpose of our stories is to share our knowledge of our world to others, and the software that we will use allows us to:

  • Take different paths
  • Ask multiple choice questions
  • Ask words or numbers

Example:  we wrote this story to learn Finnish, let’s read it together.

Note:

You will select how many objects and questions you want to add in your story.

Our suggestion:  you should have a minimum  of 4 objects and minimum 5 questions

You can add more objects and/or  questions if you wish! 🙂

Working with your storyboard

Storyboard: a panel or series of panels on which a set of sketches is arranged depicting consecutively the important changes of scene and action in a series of shots  (ref. MerriamWebster dictionary)

Examples of a storyboard

5704d2e01b1bb8219f87861d33ecbf3e4f0febc1

Your storyboard should have:

  • The text of our story including the questions you will make to the reader. Remember writing well requires practice!
  • The path of your story
  • Indicate what photos/ images you want to use in your story

Activity:

We will make a story together. We will use this storyboard and then transfer things together to the editor.

For our next session 2.2.

  • You should have your stories ready on your storyboard. Review your language. Please do not write very  LONG text at the same time, the story should be clear enough for the reader to get interested!
  • Have an idea of which photos you want to use.
  • On Wednesday 25.1. we will send you the key for the editor and publish instructions on how to use it.  Also, we will add some photos to add images.

Photos for our Observation and question table

Right now, our future leaders are busy doing their research about different objects. While doing their investigation, a good question emerged: how can we embed a photo on our observation and question table? (for more details please see our Tasks for session 2).

There is not one answer for that question because there are different possibilities on how to embed the photos. However, we have a limitation due that our  photos on Flickr are private. The implication is that we have to perform more steps in order to embed the photos on our table.

At the moment we have to be  careful with the time, and we know:

– to research the content of the objects is the most important aspect.

– the photos are used internally at the moment (students, teachers and us)

Thus, our suggestion is:

In the column of the photo leave the link of the corresponding picture you are analyzing. The link is in the URL field of the browser when the photo is open.

For example, for this participant her photo is this one:

screen-shot-2017-01-19-at-10-33-58

So, the link to be embedded is this one:

screen-shot-2017-01-19-at-9-57-32

You just copy paste the link on your observation and question table. With this solution, we need to click on the link to be able to see the photo.

We will help to solve this challenge with vision on the future as well, but now do not stress on the technical tools.

We know the content is the most important one.

Hope this comment solves the question, otherwise let us know!

All the best in the research!

Session 3: Narrative and Storyboard

Before we start:

For whom has been easy to make questions?
For whom has been challenging to make questions?
What kind of questions do you find interesting?

Why is this important?

Let me share you the vision of our project: Matkalla.

You will be an author and a game designer.

Your stories and games will be read and played worldwide. For this reason you need to know well the objects you have selected, which you already like. You will get to know more about your objects by researching about them. You need to make questions about your objects and find the answers as well.

You can support yourself by asking and responding question with your colleges on the other side of the Atlantic, via Flickr.  // Note: Next session I will review that you are making questions and responding to others question of your fellow colleges of the other school, as we agree in the last session.

As inspiration,

Let me show you how I reflected about my own objects

  1. I made an observation and questions table,  which I filled with information. It is not easy, however it is interesting!!!!

Guess what I found of my own objects?

2. Then I start to think about my story. Because we do not have A LOT of time, I can give you a hint of the THREE fundamental aspects we need to think about our stories:

– Character

– Objective of the story

– Plot

I define those aspects, and I wrote a storyline.

3.  Finally I am digitalizing my story. This is still work in process but it will show you what  we will do the NEXT session when you have your questions and storyline ready.

Note:  I will need your help to correct my Finnish and Spanish!, because my story will be in Finnish, English and Spanish.

Your stories will be in your mother tongue (Spanish or Finnish) and in English. Is this clear?

Then what do we need to do BEFORE the next session:

1. To have our table of question and answers of our objects ready.

2. To have an idea of our story in our storyline.  Remember your storyline should have a clear: Character, Purpose of the story and plot.

If you have questions, you can also leave comments on the blog or email us. You can talk to us in English, Finnish or Spanish 🙂

Now to work! 🙂
